Catatan pinggir pada MIPES tidak selamanya berisi penjelasan (syarh) seperti yang ada pada kitab kuning yang beredar di pasaran saat ini. Catatan Pinggir berisi dialog antara murid dengan gurunya, cerita tentang polemik antara sang guru dengan gurunya, penjelasan sang guru tentang polemik keagamaan yang berkembang saat itu. Dengan ungkapan lain bahwa Catatan Pinggir dapat menjadi jalan untuk menelusuri persinggungan antara Ajaran Islam yang yang ada dalam matan (Islam from center) dengan kebudayaan lokal Indonesia dimana MIPES itu dipelajari (the voice from the edge).
